Once a year, I watch The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended Editions. As soon as I complete the journey from the Shire to Mount Doom, I watch all of the special features on every disc.
Below is one of my favorite screenwriting documentaries on any DVD or Blu Ray. It’s a fantastic behind the scenes look at how Academy Award winners Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh & Phillipa Boyens adapted J.R.R Tolkien’s masterpiece.
The following video needs no introduction but I’ll give it a shot:
Here is is an hour long conversation between George R. R Martin and Stephen King! (That should be enough for you to click play right?) These two brilliant authors have written some of the most influential novels in the world for decades! Obviously their creativity extends to television and movies as well.
Personally, my favorite exchange involves Martin asking King how he manages to write so much so fast. Martin himself is currently writing the sixth novel in his Game of Thrones inspired novels A Song of Ice and Fire. A book that has taken years to complete.

YouTuber Channel Criswell recently uploaded a fantastic 18 video essay focused on the brilliant dialogue in The Social Network. Personally, I’m a massive fan of Aaron Sorkin’s work and his script for the film is phenomenal.
Screenwriter Scott Lew was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease leaving him in a wheel chair without the ability to speak, move his limbs or his neck. Yet, with the help of infra red technology, this dedicated artist was still able to write Sexy Evil Genius.
The clip below is from a documentary which details how he writes. It’s the very definition of an inspiring story.
