Screenwriting Trends Featuring Lee Jessup
Film Courage‘s Video featuring Lee Jessup tackles the changing trends in Hollywood and how it affects screenwriters.
Generally, there are two schools of thought when it comes to trends in Hollywood. Especially as it relates to aspiring screenwriters and the difficult task of breaking in.
First, you can follow the trends and try to write something that fits in with the hottest properties on the big screen. Second, you believe that emerging trends will be long gone by the time your screenplay graces a producers desk and focus on setting your own trend. It’s an interesting topic to delve into.
Obviously, the most important thing is to write a good screenplay. That’s easier said than done but trends don’t matter if you don’t write a good story. When it comes to finding an audience, I think it’s important to keep an eye on trends but don’t be a slave to them. Hollywood trends are already dated when the films reach theaters. The next big trend is already in development. It’s up to you to figure out how your project fits in.
For example, now is probably not the time to write a vampire story. A few years ago, thanks to films like Twilight, Vampires were hot! Not so much. It all comes down to your story. Vampires may not be a hot Hollywood trend in 2017 but a good story is a good story. Maybe your Vampire script contains the magic needed to bring them back.
Jessup mentions the bubble bursting for superhero movies. I don’t know if I necessarily agree given the large amount of big budget adaptations from Marvel, DC, Fox and Sony etc… But the appetite for smaller original superhero films may be fading in favor of scripts based on established (and expensive) intellectual properties. Again, I wouldn’t let that detract you from writing something you believe in.
The lesson here is a hot Hollywood trend shouldn’t dictate the type of stories you want to tell. Let your imagination and instincts handle that.
